In order to treat obstructive sleep apnea, there are several methods that can be used. CPAP machines, BiPAP and APAP machines, surgical methods, and dental appliances are some of these. PAP machines are devices that forcefully blow pressurized air into the airway of the patient in order to promote proper respiration cycles. CPAP devices are the most common of these, which only use one uniform pressure throughout the CPAP therapy. BiPAP machines have two pressures, one for inhaling and another for exhaling. APAP devices change pressures depending on the breathing pattern of the individual which it detects through the interface, usually a mask. The appropriate pressure setting is determined by CPAP titration during an overnight sleep study.
Surgical methods like UPPP, LAUP, radiofrequency ablation, and sleep apnea pillar procedure are used to eliminate obstructive sleep apnea problems permanently. However, surgical procedures like these cause great discomfort because of the after-operation side effects, and sometimes they may not be very effective. Some people who have undergone such procedures have attested that instead of treating the problem, the surgical procedure just worsened the obstructive sleep apnea. These operations are very expensive, and for people who do not have enough means to pay them or have only mild to moderate obstructive sleep apnea problems, these procedures may not be beneficial.
Dental appliances are worn in the mouth to keep the throat muscles from coming in contact with each other. There are two types of dental appliances: the mandibular advancement device and the tongue retaining device. These are usually custom fitted by dentists so that they will fit the patient’s mouth perfectly.
Central and mixed sleep apnea are treated using BiPAP or APAP devices. These two conditions are worse than obstructive sleep apnea and may not be easily treated. Nonetheless, all types of sleep apneas are difficult to live with.
A sleep apnea sufferer is very unfortunate, but if there is a way to keep the lifestyle as close to normal as possible, then he will by all means find it so that he may be able to at least experience an almost normal life.
