The last step in winterizing a pool and the last step in re-opening a pool for the summer both have something in common, they are both to remove the pool cover. As such one of the most important tasks is to keep the Winter Pool Cover clean!
Winter pool cover maintenance depends on the actual cover as there are several varieties. The first and most common is the Rugged Mesh Cover. This type of cover consists of finely woven mesh which allows rain water and very fine silt to pass resulting in no rain water to remove from the cover. However this does not stop leaves from building up. To keep this pool cover clean a fair amount of sweeping or clearing would be required on the actual pool cover.
Pool covers with built in drain systems often called Easy Drain covers are another option. These types of covers work well to eliminate the water and prevent silt from passing into the pool. Due to the design of this type of cover leaves and silt will build up on the cover and need to be cleared.
One of the most effective ways to keep your winter pool cover clean is with a Leaf Net. This is a mesh net that is placed over-top of the pool cover and i simply lifted off and traps all the leaves and debris and can easily be used to transport and dispose of them properly.
Keeping your winter pool cover clean is part of standard pool service and can be made easier with previously mentioned tools. In addition pool cover pumps are a great too. A pool cover pump will allow you to pump excess water off your traditional winter pool cover to prevent the excess weight and sagging. It is important to remove excess water which may come from rain or melted snow and ice during the winter season.
