The popularity of the tankless water heater has been growing in the United States due to rising energy costs and a renewed emphasis on energy conservation. However, in Europe and Asia these “on demand” water heaters have been in use and in favor for many years. The primary manufacturer is Titan water heater. It has gained such notoriety that overseas a tankless water heater is commonly referred to as a titan water heater.
The Titan tankless water heater works by heating water at the source through sophisticated electronic circuitry or gas heat. Using a super-fast heating element, the water is passed through coils that are small but powerful, and close in proximity to the fixture. The units use a heat exchanger, which is activated when water comes in contact with the coils. Since in physics there is no such thing as cold. There is only the presence or absence of heat. The heat exchanger senses the absence of heat and transfers the heat energy from the electrical or gas source into the water.
Advantages include
• as much hot water as you like, without runing out when a tank is emptied
• no paying for unused hot standby water
• no need to wait between showers since flow is continuous
• compact size in space-limited applications
• instant hot water, even upstairs or in extremely cold weather
• heating elements are resistant to mineral deposits
• installation requires no venting like traditional tank units
• last five to ten years longer than tank heaters
Disadvantages include
• dependence on water pressure means they may not work with all well systems
• a single heating unit may be easily overburdened if more than one fixture (such as a water cooler dispenser or shower) demands hot water at the same time
• existing PVC or plastic pipes must be retrofitted to withstand heat fluctuations
• water may be hotter and may be more susceptible to scorching or burning, so must be adjusted and used with care
• whole house systems can be expensive and require professional installation
Titan tankless water heaters are an efficient and Earth-friendly luxury. Their growing popularity and long list of advantages makes them a valid consideration for individual and whole-house applications, and in both new construction or remodel projects.
