More and more retailers are investing in the gift card and gift certificate market; this is because more and more consumers prefer these modern kinds of gift. However, one question that lingers in anybody’s mind is which of the two is better, a gift card or a gift certificate?
From the perspective of the company or the retailer, gift cards are generally more expensive as compared to gift certificates. This is because gift cards use more sophisticated technology – using network of computers and centralized location of gift card balances. Larger companies can invest on gift cards, but smaller companies would prefer offering gift certificates instead.
In terms of size, gift cards are more convenient to bring compared to gift certificates. This is because you can carry gift cards with your ATM card or credit cards. As for the gift certificates, even if fold it, it may not fit your wallet or purse.
Another feature that a gift card has is regarding available balance. For gift certificates, you need to spend it at one shot, meaning that there’s no concept of available or remaining balance. This is where gift cards clearly have large advantage. You can check your gift card balance by calling their customer care number, visiting their store in person, or checking it online. Regarding its reuse, gift cards have slight advantage because there are cards that can be reloaded or replenished.
One downside of gift card is in terms of charges or fees. Some gift card companies charges fees to unused balances that are kept idle for more than a year for instance. However, there are some free gift cards that don’t charge any fees at all.
In terms of expiration, gift cards and gift certificates are somewhat equal. Some doesn’t have any expiration while there are those that have. Both of them are also identical in terms of usage, because these are safer than carrying cash.
